Living Wunderkammer
A former cinema in a Basel residential and commercial building from the Art Deco period is converted into a flat and furnished with a collection of historical furniture and pieces of art. Contemporary architecture is combined with historical components and antiques to create a fascinating body of art. A converted old forge in Ziefen (BL) serves as a rural retreat during the creation of this unique place. Both residences are Aladdin’s caves of modern and antique art, shaped by the personality of their passionately collecting owner, who transforms his everyday life into a perpetual journey through time.
The magnificently illustrated book takes us through the rooms in the city and in the country. Individual objects and antique textiles are presented in their significance for art and cultural history. The two buildings, which are also remarkable from a historical and urban planning point of view, are also acknowledged by two architectural experts.
With contributions by Daniel Burckhardt, Klaus Spechtenhauser, Birgitt Borkopp-Restle and a collector's portrait by Gudrun Sachse (Wer wohnt da?, NZZ Folio).
